LECTURE "RESEARCHING SENSITIVE LINGUISTIC REALITIES: EPISTEMOLOGICAL CHALLENGES"

This Wednesday 11 March 2026 our MA program in English language, Linguistics and Translation will host a guest lecture by Dina Mehmedbegovic-Smith, Associate Professor of Education and Applied Linguistics at University College London (UCL), Institute of Education, UK (University College London). The title of her lecture is "Researching Sensitive Linguistic Realities: Epistemological Challenges". The focus of her lecture will be on the study of language loss, hierarchy and identity, researcher positionality in linguistically complex contexts, children’s voice in research and research challenges when researching the powerful in education and policy making. The lecture will take place at 10.30 pm in the MULTIMEDIA CENTRE FOR THE PROCESSING OF SPEECH AND TEXT, Room 723.

Dr Dina Mehmedbegovic-Smith is an Associate Professor of Education and Applied Linguistics at University College London (UCL), Institute of Education, UK. She teaches across a range of master’s and doctoral programmes. Her research focuses on multilingualism, language hierarchies, language loss, and the role of power, identity, and policy in shaping linguistic realities in education. In her work, she also explores researcher positionality and advocates for the inclusion of children’s voices in research on linguistically diverse communities.
