Tο Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών (ΠΜΣ) «Αγγλική Γλώσσα, Γλωσσολογία και
Μετάφραση» του Τμήματος Αγγλικής Γλώσσας και Φιλολογίας, σε συνεργασία με
το Διατμηματικό Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών (ΔΠΜΣ) «Μετάφραση:
Ελληνική, Αγγλική, Ρωσική», διοργανώνει τη σειρά διαλέξεων «Σεμινάρια του
ΠΜΣ/ΔΠΜΣ» σχετικά με θεματικές που αφορούν τη γλώσσα, τη γλωσσολογία και
τη μετάφραση.
Η πρώτη διάλεξη για το Εαρινό εξάμηνο θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Τετάρτη,
18 Μαρτίου στις 12 μμ στην Αίθουσα 209 της Φιλοσοφικής Σχολής. Θα
ακολουθήσει κέρασμα.

“Parallel corpora in diachronic linguistics:
An investigation of the interplay of modality and negation in the Gospels”
In this talk, we focus on the advantages offered by parallel corpora in
diachronic linguistic research, and in particular by the parallel study of
Biblical translations. We present novel tools for linguistic research in
this area, such as parallel corpora annotated for specific linguistic
features, and we show their application by means of a case study involving
the interplay of modality and negation in the Greek New Testament and in
its Latin Vulgata translation. In particular, we analyze the form and the
interpretation of negation in passages annotated as modal in the WoPoss
dataset of the Gospels, in order to detect issues of scope and
alternations in the form of the negative marker and the negative
indefinites. Furthermore, we discuss the rendering of the Greek negative
μή-series in Latin, which does not have a full-fledged modality-sensitive
series of negative items, but presents a negative marker nē with special
illocutionary properties, which are undergoing changes during the Late
Latin period.
